How to Organise Your Garage

Whether you are trying to organise your home because you’re due a rental inspection or you’re just sick and tired of looking at all the mess, organising the spaces you live in is an absolute must. Your garage is one place that’s likely to need an overhaul, similar to the basement or attic.

You need to be able to walk into your garage space and feel like it’s for more than just your car. It should feel like an organised space where you can find what you want, when you want it.

Sometimes, though, it can be overwhelming to walk into the garage and not know where to start. Buying protective tiles for the garage floor is a great way to protect the floor once you’ve cleaned it properly, but what do you do about the rest of the space?

What do you do with all of your boxes of stuff that you’ve kept over the years? Below, we’ve put together a list of things that you can do to organise your garage space and make it feel like you’re getting somewhere!

Start the decluttering process

Organisation starts from the ground up and that means looking at immediately changing up your clutter first. You need to put things into piles to keep, to donate, to sell and to take to the tip.

The stuff you’re keeping needs some organising into boxes and shelving so that you can really make sure that you’re on top of your organising. You can label the boxes depending on what’s in them, and you can reclaim the space of your garage to purge and declutter it properly. It sounds daunting, but once you do it you’ll be thanking yourself.

Maximise the storage you use

It’s always nice to have boxes in the garage for your stuff but what do you do with those boxes? Having shelves bolted to the wall will ensure that you have the right space for them, and you’ll find that cabinets and shelving offer you the stability you need.

Smaller bins and totes are great for the smaller items but larger shelves and cabinets can help with the rest. Everything needs a place and you should put the things that you use regularly in full view.

Give the space a lick of paint

This may not come under organising but you can definitely give your garage a fresh vibe when you give it a lick of paint. You can make the entire room look cleaner and brighter than ever before.

You’ll be able to do well when you pick a lighter colour that opens the space, and you can then decide whether to use the garage as an extension of the main living space in future, too.

Add some lighting

It’s going to be so much easier to organise your garage with the right lighting to help. You need to have the right visibility and if your garage is dark, you’re going to need to light it up properly to see every nook and cranny.

LED lighting is efficient and you can get it installed in the form of lamps or strip lighting to open the space.

Clear space for your car

Don’t forget, the primary use of the garage is for your car to have somewhere to live. If you want your garage to be a decluttered space, you’ll be more motivated if you make sure that the car has somewhere to sit.

It forces you to keep the space more organised because if you don’t, your car won’t have anywhere to go! You can add flooring to the space the car will be driven onto to protect the floor, but you can keep the edges clear because you’ve got the boxes up and out of the way, too.

Go vertical with your storage

The walls are empty in the garage, right? Well, you can buy shelving that stacks against the walls so that you can use it for storage purposes and you can go vertical with your storage.

Garage walls can also hold hooks and pegboards, making them a versatile option for your hammers, bicycles and more. You can even hang bins for tools, hoses and even garden tools so that you can access them easily. This is a great way to create space for your car, too, because you’re using the wall space more than the floor.

Don’t do it all in one day

It’s so much easier to organise your garage when you split the work. By dragging it out over a few days, you can ensure that your garage feels and looks brand new. It can be really overwhelming to clean out the garage but it doesn’t have to be if you can split the work properly.

Set up a garage sale

You might find a lot of clutter in your garage that you don’t want to keep and it’s so much easier to get rid of it when you sell it, so why not set up a garage sale.

Not only can you let the neighbours know that there’s a sale happening, you can use the proceeds to buy the storage you need. You’ll clear the space, avoid putting things into landfill and you’ll be able to make someone else’s day. It’s a win-win-win situation.

Stay on top of it

Is there any use in spending all of your time on your garage space if you can’t maintain it? You need to make sure that you are regularly staying on top of it so that you don’t end up with it looking like a bomb site anymore.

Your garage deserves as much attention as the other rooms of the house, so don’t discount the space and don’t neglect it once you’ve made it look great.

Organising your garage doesn’t have to take much time, as long as you make a list and get yourself started. Don’t leave it and procrastinate: sooner started, sooner finished and you’ll thank yourself later for the work that you put into the room. Watch it transform and you’ll feel super happy with the result.
