How to Furnish Your New Home on a Budget

When you get a new house, one of the things to consider is how to furnish it. This can, unfortunately, be a massive expense. But furniture is what makes a house feel more like a home, and it’s functional as well. So, how can you be frugal when getting furniture?

Starting From Scratch

If you’re moving from one house to another, you don’t necessarily have to worry about furniture. You can take your existing furniture with you and, if you’re going to a house with more space, you can fill in the gaps more slowly. You might want to change things up over time, but it’s not as urgent as if you have no furniture at all.

When you’re starting from scratch, you need to focus on the most important pieces of furniture first. This means getting appliances for your kitchen if the house doesn’t have any, as well as beds and places to sit. If you work from home, you’ll need to get your office set up as a priority.

Friends and Family

One of the best ways to get furniture and save money is to see what friends and family are willing to give you. This obviously isn’t foolproof and you can’t be fussy, but it can be really helpful to get you back on your feet.

Don’t demand that people give you furniture, but tell people about your plans and that you need furniture. You might be surprised at what people will give you.

If you want to change how furniture looks, you can always invest in sofa covers. These can switch out the colour scheme of your furniture and also protect the fabric underneath from any spills or potential stains. This is a must-have option if you have messy kids or pets that might cause stains. This way, your furniture will last for longer, even if you change how you decorate your house.

Second Hand Stores

If you’re trying to save money on your furniture, second hand stores and charity shops can be a great place to try. Most of these stores sell clothes, but you can find second hand furniture shops as well. You can find some great deals and even antiques.

Another good source of heavily discounted or even free furniture is online marketplaces that allow people to sell things directly. If you’re willing and able to pick up your furniture, you might be able to grab some things for free as people just want to get rid of them.

Sale Hunting

But what if you want new furniture or more choice for furniture? You can still find some great deals in furniture shops and, even better, this furniture will last for a lot longer.

Wait for seasonal sales if you want the best deals or choose your favourite store and ask them to email you in case there’s a sale on. This way, you can find out when there’s a sale when it’s just started, allowing you to pick from a larger selection of discounted furniture.
