The friendship and love we receive from our pets is truly priceless, but looking after them does come with costs. From vet trips to grooming to food, there are lots of things your furry friend will need… and over time, these costs can start to add up.
Thankfully, there are lots of ways to save money as a pet owner and none of these tips will compromise your pet’s happiness or health. In fact, some of the tips may even benefit your pet’s health!
Here are six tips to help you save money as a pet owner.
1. Adopt, Don’t Shop
If you haven’t bought a pet yet and you are thinking about getting one, adopt instead of buying a pet. A purebred cat or dog can cost thousands of pounds — and many are prone to specific illnesses later in life — so you may also have to pay expensive vet bills.
Adopting an animal is much cheaper, and it also means you will save an animal’s life. This is perfect for any animal lover who wants to help.
2. Try a Subscription Service
If you regularly buy the same product for your pet (such as toothbrush chew sticks or kibble), consider signing up to a subscription service to save money. There are lots of online subscription services to choose from. For example, you can save 5% on Amazon by signing up to Subscribe & Save, and Petco will give you 30% off your first repeat delivery. You can also check your local pet store website to see if they have any deals or offers.
3. Spay/Neuter at a Humane Society
It can be expensive to have your pet spayed at a private vets, but you can save money by going to a humane society instead. They will normally spay your pet for free or for a fraction of the cost of getting it done at the vets. Spayed pets also tend to live longer, so it will benefit your pet as well as you!
4. Save On Treats
Dog treats can be pricey, but you can save money on them by buying in bulk. For instance, you can get discounts on bulk orders if you buy from ceebeedoo.com. This means you will have lots of healthy, tasty treats for your furry friend!
5. Keep Up on Vaccinations
It can be tempting to put off expensive vaccinations, especially if you’re struggling to find the money, but it is normally much cheaper to pay for vaccinations than it is to pay for health issues caused by a lack of vaccinations.
6. Groom at Home
Taking your pet to the groomers can be a frequent expense, but you can reduce costs by grooming your animal at home. Buy some simple grooming supplies online, and then watch video grooming tutorials online to learn the tricks of the trade. This will also benefit your pet, as it means the experience will be less nerve-wracking for them as you will be doing it, instead of a stranger.
