Mould is one of those things that we know is bad, but most of us don’t really know how bad it actually is. After all, most of us probably don’t know the immediate or even long-term effects of mould in the house. We mainly just see it as a kind of dirty or bad thing that looks kind of gross at times, and we just know to get rid of it.
But mould can start as something as simple as small black dots in your bathroom, and you won’t be able to fix it easily or cheaply if you let it fester and spread.
So we’ve written this article to kind of warn people why it’s really important to deal with mould as soon as possible, but also as an educational piece to teach people about the dangers of mould.
Identifying mould in the home
Before we start, let’s take a look at how you identify mould in the home.
The most likely scenario that you notice mould in the home is by seeing it. Mould is typically black, but it can also be green or even brown. It’s usually spotty and might be next to other mould spores. You’ll usually see them in areas that have moisture problems, such as an unventilated bathroom or near a wooden window frame.
However, you’ll also notice mould wherever there’s water damage. Another telltale sign is a musty or earthy smell in parts of your home. And lastly, if you ever notice random but fairly persistent allergic reactions or breathing problems, then it could be a sign of mould too.
Why leaving mould untouched can be problematic
Mould can lead to a bunch of different negative health effects. For instance, it could make health issues like asthma more problematic, or you might experience allergies or a compromised immune system. Since the spores can get into your system, it can lead to coughing, nasal congestion, or even throat-related problems. If you’re particularly susceptible to the spores, then it can lead to more severe problems.
If you don’t use mould cleaning services as soon as possible, then the mould can spread really quickly throughout your home. It might start in your bathroom, and then spread into the structure of your home or the outside. This makes the problem much harder to deal with because you’ve got to worry about multiple parts of your home now instead of just the isolated problem.\
Property damage is another serious issue that comes with mould. Mould problems can drastically decrease property value, and if you leave it for too long then it’ll peel away paint on your walls, it could damage the structure of your home, and even lead to really expensive repairs if you’re not careful.
Avoiding mould in the home
There are a number of good ways to avoid mould in your home.
You can start by keeping your home clean and ensuring that every room has proper ventilation. If there’s too much humidity, then it creates healthy conditions for mould to grow–and you don’t want that! Make sure you fix any water leaking too and keep an eye on water-damaged areas. Mould thrives in humid conditions, so eliminating humidity is the key to controlling its spread.
