Scotland is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and there are a few cities that are rich in history, stunning to look at and have so much to do it can be hard to narrow it down.
No matter what you like to do, from long walks, delicious food, a night out, and enjoying plenty of history!
So what should you be doing when you head to Edinburgh?
Old Town
It won’t take you long to see just how old many of the places in Scotland are – and Old Town in Edinburgh is beautiful. And just like the name suggests, it is the oldest part of the town. New Town is based around George Street. Old Town has everything you’d want in a day dripped with history, gorgeous historic houses, gorgeous little squares and, of course, cobbled streets.
There is plenty of local history and places to enjoy a coffee here.
Edinburgh Castle
Would a trip to Edinburgh be complete without a trip to Edinburgh Castle? No! This castle is one of the most famous castles in Scotland – and definitely, a place you should check out.
Since it is a popular place to visit, it is a good idea to book tickets in advance and get a guided tour because there is so much to learn and enjoy!
Make sure to be there at 1 pm so that you can enjoy the firing of the cannon, something that started way back in the 19th century. That cannon was originally used to help ship captains set their clocks for navigation.
Once you’re done, it is a short walk to the best brunch in Edinburgh!
Food
Edinburgh has been creeping up to become a foodie location for several years. Some of the traditional foods of Scotland are haggis, but butteries/rowies, or some more northern villages call rollies, shortbread, and plenty of seafood.
The Witchery is in Old Town, so while you’re there, it is worthwhile. The Gardener’s Cottage is highly recommended for traditional fare too.
There are a couple of soups that you should keep an eye out too: Cullen Skink, made with onions, smoked haddock and potatoes or Cock-a-leekie made with chicken stock and leeks.
And whenever possible, get yourself a cranachan!
Scottish Ballet
For those who like beauty and spookiness, The Edinburgh Festival Theater is in the centre of Edinburgh, so very accessible. The theatre is said to be haunted by The Great Lafayette, who died in a fire in the building.
For the rest of the time you can enjoy both the Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet.
Secret Streets
If you like to do things that are a bit unusual to the everyday, then The Real Mary King’s Close is the place to head to. Buy your tickets for a guided tour to make the most of it (tours last about 1 hour).
For the last 15 or so years, these unusual hidden streets have been open to the public. Many people report the streets feel a little bit eerie due to the dark and troublesome history, including the bubonic plague.
