Your pet may very well be a member of your family, as important to you as any person that you know, and you might be willing to do anything for them. That doesn’t mean that they can’t be serious pain in the rear end. A lot of pet owners experience this, in particular, when they’re trying to move home. Here, we’re going to look at some of the struggles you can expect, and what you can do to get around them.
Find the services that you need
Before you move with your pet, think about the services that you’re going to need to take care of them. Not only is finding a vet vital but if you use a grooming service, you need to find one of those. Or you can save money by grooming at home. At the very least, make sure that you’re able to locate a pet store, or if you can’t, look at online services that you can rely on, instead.
Ensure your new home welcomes them
Unfortunately, not every home is very friendly to new pets. There are landlords who will not abide by them, even if they never mention it in their listings or contracts. Some living environments aren’t very well suited to pets, either. Take the time to look for pet-friendly apartments, first and foremost. That way, you can make sure that no unexpected issues are going to pop up once your neighbors realize you have a critter with you.
Keep them away from the move
If you have to do a lot of packing, furniture moving, and unpacking, then having your pet out and about while you’re doing it is going to be a serious hassle. What’s more, it can be dangerous, especially if they’re running around your feet interrupting your movers. Find a daycare for them to spend the day at while you deal with the practicalities of moving if you can’t find a pet sitter to take them for a few hours. Don’t underestimate how long it might take to carry out a move, either.
Make moving easier on them
Regardless of whether or not you’re moving them at the same time as all your furniture and belongings, you have to bring your pet at some point. If you’re able to crate your pet for the journey, it’s time to do that and to do what you can to keep them comfortable, including giving them their favorite toy, and stopping when you think they need a break. There are pet relocation companies who handle it for you, as well.
Give them time to adapt
A new living environment is, naturally, going to be a major change for a pet. Some of them can seem to react in ways that seem regressive, such as having accidents in the home. Help them acclimate and be patient. Make sure they have their familiar comforts, such as their bed, toy, and the like as soon as you can.
Moving with a pet can certainly be a pain but, thankfully, there are ways to get around it. Just make sure to prepare in advance rather than running head-first into every hurdle mentioned above.
