Now that we’re approaching the colder months of the year, it will soon be time to dig out the winter coat and turn on the radiators. One thing we all should be thinking about is how we can modify our homes so that we can enjoy the cosy months of the year without spending too much money or worrying about being cold. Here is how you can prepare yourself and your home for the winter.
Bleed radiators
Bleeding your radiators might not have been something you’ve thought about doing, but did you know that by taking the time to do this (at least once a year), you can significantly increase the energy efficiency of your radiators? If you’re not confident in doing this, you could hire a professional. However, there are many DIY guides on YouTube if you want to save a few pennies and give it a go yourself. Nobody should ever pause at the idea of turning their heating on if they are cold, so get this job out of the way and enjoy a warm and cosy home this winter.
If, like many people, you’re finding it extremely expensive to run your radiators, it might be an idea to invest in halogen heaters. They are fairly inexpensive to buy, and you can run them for a few pence an hour. They are extremely effective and even have safety features that will turn the heater off if it’s knocked over.
Invest in double glazing
If your home has single glazed windows then you’ll definitely know how cold it can get in the winter months. Not only does the cold come in, but the heat you create inside of your home escapes easier, which in turn costs you more to keep your home warm. Consider investing in double glazed windows, even if it’s just the main rooms your family uses. However, replacing all of your windows will save you money in the long run and cost you less to keep your home warm all winter.
Buy draught excluders
If you often feel a draught from under your doors in the winter and want to prevent this from happening (and keep as much heat in as possible), then draught excluders are a great way of solving this problem. You can also buy draught excluders to place on your window sills if you can’t afford to replace them just yet. Or, alternatively, you could makeshift draught excluders using a foam filling in pillow cases and place them in draughty areas of your home.
Dig out the winter furnishings
Finally, another great way of ensuring you keep warm this winter is by digging out and replacing all of your winter furnishings. Hang thicker curtains and blinds, keep throws and cushions on your sofa at all times, and maybe even treat yourself to a thicker rug to keep your toes warm.
By doing these four things you can keep your home nice and toasty all winter! Doing the hard work before it gets really cold will make your life easier in the long run!
